So you wanna cosplay?

The cosplay hobby is slowly gaining the hype and everyone wants to jump in the bandwagon. What used to be a simple gathering of friends who want to dress-up as their favourite characters for fun has suddenly become a fandom, a misunderstood event where people whore for attention. What IS cosplay? In my opinion, cosplay (costume-play) is to dress-up in anime, manga, game, j-rock or movie characters. The purpose of cosplay, is to role-play and portray the characters as accurately as possible. Some people goes to the extent of styling wigs, making replica weapons, wearing custom contact lenses and crafting seemingly impossible props all for the sake of cosplay. In Malaysia, the cosplay scene is not new, beginning even from roughly the year 2000 but only recently, the hype has gone up a notch.

The problem with cosplayers nowadays, especially the newbies is that they misunderstand the real concept of cosplay. Cosplay isn't all about the glamour, the show-off, the photos and the publicity. It is all about being happy to be able to be a character you love even for a day. Cosplay is all about having fun. Therefore, if cosplay is making you miserable, stressed out for not being able to do things right, don't cosplay, because cosplay is supposed to be a hobby, not a necessity or a compulsory thing. One thing that I have learned so far is, NEVER EVER rush a costume. I learned it the hard way and the result is a cosplay that is just mediocre in standard. If a costume is complicated, take time to plan all the parts, gather the parts that are needed and slowly put them together. If the costume requires special parts, make the effort to find out how to make them. However, if it is not part of your expertise, i believe that it is OKAY to commission it from other people so long you do not claim to have done it yourself.

What sets the standard for cosplay? Now, if we were to conseder cosplay a hobby, why do we have a standard to comply? Just as much as there is a quality standard in GUNDAM and ROBOT model making, cosplay has its standards as well. It is usually measured by how much you look like the character, costume and props accuracy, posing accuracy and acting accuracy. I am sure that many of you have experienced looking at an "awful" cosplayer photo and of course a very nice cosplayer photo. Sometimes, a nice cosplayer is rated "GOOD" just because he or she is good-looking or beautiful eventhough he/she does not even dress properly like the character. In particular, I do not condemn these cosplayers. Tney just have a bonus for being good-looking. This situation remains a heavily discussed topic as to what is a good cosplayer. There are some cosplayer who looks utterly horrible but yet have everything from top to toe accurate to the character. Should he/she not be a good cosplayer just because he/she is not good looking? I wouldn't say he/she is a bad cosplayer because i will definitely compliment the costume and props. However, looking like the character is part of the criteria and they just don't cut the mark for that section. In oppose to standards, cosplaying is suppose to be fun and nothing should stop you from wanting to cosplay a character you love. So, its up to your conscience as to whether you can portray the character well or not. (being sarcastic here)

In Malaysia, more and more people are wanting to cosplay. If you are a cosplay newbie here are a few tips I would like to give :
- don't cosplay a character that is too difficult

- try your best to find your sources for items, materials before asking others, it gets annoying when a newbie refuses to make an effort.

- everyone needs to start from somewhere, don't be put off because your 1st cosplay isn't as "nice" as the more experienced cosplayers. There will always be room to improve and in time, you will do better.

- If you are seriously going to attempt a complicated character, take your time to analyze the character. What materials am i going to use for the costume? Are the shoes rounded or pointed? What am I going to make the armour out of? Does the tassels hang this way or that way? Ask yourself questions about the costume and find the answers for them. And again, TAKE YOUR TIME to do these things as rushing won't do anyone good

~*When I started I was a newbie myself, my costume was at least 50% inaccurate minus for the fact I got my Ragnarok Online Alchemist Cart too look good. Here's a pic to show the "evolution" of my cosplay. With the ones on the left 1st and the ones on the right are the newer ones~*

The next best thing about cosplay is making friends. I have made many wonderful friends just through cosplay. I believe that cosplay helps to connect people from all over the worlds. Going to an international cosplay event will definitely land you with many friends from different races, culture and community. I would list all my newfound friends now but the list would go on forever. I hope to cosplay more and meet more people until of course, I am too old to cosplay and have much more important responsibilities. LOL

My experience at Cosfest V 2006 , Singapore

Last weekend i went for a cosplay event in Singapore, Cosfest V 2006 at Downtown East, Pasir Ris, Singapore. The event was superb and i got to meet many new friends as well as meet up with fellow cosplayers whom i have only known through online contact. Anyway...I took a train with Misao, DMJewelle, Heal, Kitty and kitty's friend Michelle on Friday night at 10. We arrived in Singapore at about 6am and we took a cab to our hotel in Bencoolen Street. After washing up and having breakfast at the nearest McD, we took off to Bugis Street. There are so many shops there and the bargains are awesome. We then start to tour the many Kinokuniyas and Anime shops around the area. Mainly we cleared the shop off comic books..lol...we met up with a couple more groups of Msians + singaporeans and had lunch together. We took entire 3 tables in the wanton mee shop LOL. We started to continue our tour like a big tour group and my trip ending at Takashimaya, a shopping complex with very expensive shops >o<.. Our target there is again the largest Kinokuniya in Sg. The reason for targeting kino is because the mangas are cheaper than msia and a lot of the titles are not available in Malaysia. I manage to buy Tokyo Mew Mew Ala Mode Book 2. Yay! We then got back to the hotel and washed up. At about 8, we all met up at Ang Mo Kio MRT and ate dinner at a foodcourt nearby. I tried the Singapore's mee rebus and....its ok ok la... pudding was for desert and we head on to a nearby comic store..haha...since everyone is manga/comic crazy @_@ ;; After that we return to the hotel, cleaned up and watched a movie being aired on Chn5. I was preparing some last minute stuff for my cosplay the next day. Misao did a facial and face massage for me ^_^; It was very relaxing. The next morning was D day. The event that we have all been waiting for cosfest~!. Taking a cab to the event in costume was really awkward. We couldnt help it as we had to check out before 12. The event was at 1 and we might not have enough time to prepare.

Anyway...enough with my ramblings and on with the photos ^^ As you can see the photos are all not taken by me...since i did not manage to carry my camera around during the event. I just recently went up to KL to visit my friend Rai and go sighseeing + shopping + eating around KL. On the 1st day she brought me to Cheras Lesure Mall. We had sushi Baskin Robins and "The Omen" movie to top it all up. After the show we stopped by Steven Corners for tea and talked non stop (bah...girls....)... The nxt day (saturday) I brough her to the place she was working at for her internship so that she could take some of her documents she left there. I met one of her boss..Mr. Diq (^^;;;)...the company's name is Voxel Studios. We had breakfast with him at Dunkin Doughnuts. Mr. Diq was indeed a very charismatic, funny guy and very capable at his job. No wonder Rai loves working there. O_o ;; After dropping Mr. Diq off at a car workshop we went to Lowyatt to grab some ahem...installers....Flash8, Photoshop and Illustrator CS...Dreaweaver..some fonts cd... We then had lunch at a Ramen shop in Sg wang. Rai then had her fingernails printed....yes PRINTED with design. The nail printer was LEXMARK LOL... the price was not too bad...RM40 for all 10 fingers and you can even choose different designs for different fingernails. We then browsed in shops and window shopped around Sg wang. We stopped by an anime merchandise shop on the 6th floor to get Mai Otome figurines. They sell them in this machine dat spits them out in plastic balls ^^ ;; The models are not bad in quality...the oni problem is you might not get what you want since the balls come out in random. Oh well.. i did get wat i want tho..Arika and Nina figurine! yay!

My camera is a little blur but oh well...

I met up with my boyfriend and my friend Andrea on Sunday at Sunway Pyramid. We had lunch, walked around and then we went ice-skating.. whee...it was my 1st time on the ice and it was rather fun and amusing. My bf was having fun trying to teach me and amused at me trying my best to balance. I learned pretty quickly and could skate without help for a short distance at the end of the session. ^_^ ; I fell a total of four times and now have a bruise on both knees.. @_@ ;; ouch...falling on ice is painful...I look forward to ice-skating again when i visit Pyramid again ^^

I came home on sunday night and went to bed immediately. It was a tiring but fun trip to KL.So i started editing and reposting and redoing all my photo collages for my cosplaylab account. You can view them all here :

I also took a test photo for my version 2 of my Hinamori Momo from Bleach cosplay. I cut my fringe but the hairdresser cut it too short for me =_= ;; it will be a week or two before i can do a shoot for my Hinamori Momo remake

This costume is entirely made by myself...including props and shoes. There is still much work to be done but i hope to get it done soon. I only have two weeks and a website to top the work..

Finally finished my studies and taking a break from all that assignment and sleepless nights..w00t im supposed to be RESTING not staying up late till..till...till didnt sleep the entire night. Learning how to play DOTA isn't a very good sign either...dang...I'm still very new and there is so much to learn about the game. Currently i practice Kardeil Sharpeye - The Dwarven Sniper. I really love using this character although I have not brought out its full potential yet. Its darn good for KS-ing and farming for gold and exp though. So far...I don't get pawned as much anymore but then again I am unable to pawn other people that well also. Maybe I should try another character. Ok now what is so nice about Dwarven Sniper...pardon me im still jakun at DOTA so im still gonna say stuff that most DOTA freakx already know. Scattershot is one skill that i like, it kills da mass creeps and reel in gold like a cash spitting machine. Assasinate shot is the best skill to pwn the enemy when the enemy is low on life and THINKS he can run away...HOHOHOHO...deng shooting from 2 screens away is awesome. I still have not decided on what is the best combination of items for the character. So far i will aim for Desolater, Demon Edge, Hyperstone, Hand of Midas, Boots of Travel...DOTA hardcores might find me a super noob lol... Had fun playing with some friends at a CC in Sri Kembangan last week. Man its fun playing that game 4 hours non stop with friends. gyahahaha...

Last week I also attended the games seminar at MSC Innovation centre. It was quite a fun experience though I did went there late and missed the seminar and food (Ellem u eat all the food finishhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh). I got there in time for the game exhibition though. IT game design students and me and my fcm friends presented the games we designed to the industry people. I didn't think i presented too well..although the response was quite the opposite. Gone a bit too casual i guess, heck at least it entertains the crowd.The best part was the shooting session. We got some good advice and comments from the more experienced people...so it was worthwhile. The place was really cool and the people were really friendly. I really had an enjoyable time there and learnt one lesson from something i noticed from everyone's presentation , " One should do what one is capable of ". Just some quote i made up...that would mean, we should always try to do what we are capable of within the time contraints and not aim too high, not that we shouldn't aim high but always consider the consequences before starting a project. I'm glad Mr. Hilmy thought this to us who were in DM Delta FCM. I owe him a lot just from learning this phrase alone.

I got back to Melaka and finally shifted out of Cyberjaya for good (byebye Cyberjaya mamak)...and to think im suppose to rest right...after 4 years of "suffering" in MMU i decided to pile up more work. I seem to have a neverending list of things i want to do. The 1st thing i did was finish up my Chibimoon wig. Lets take a look at it...

This is how it looks like in the beginning...the hair extensions didnt match the base wig colour...Why does my face look like that? Cuz im bloody sleepy and bloody tired

Now this is all completed..with the costume and all. I fixed the hair buns by adding a layer of hair from the base wig. FEAR the KETUMBUHAN on my head...WAHAHAHAHA...Those babies took at least 2-4 hours each to do...which in the end ...finished my entire can of Gatsby Super Hard Set and Keep Spray. I now swear by this brand for anyone who wants to use hairspray for wig styling. Now i left oni some minor accessories and I am done. I meant to finish this for the KDU event but the event was postponed. Oh well....

I attended the GACC event organized by MMU Melaka's anime club - EMINA. I cosplayed as Mew Pudding from Tokyo Mew Mew there. Gawsh i look weird in blonde....

Mew pudding has the DNA of a Golden Tamarin Lion monkey and is the 4th member of the Tokyo Mew Mew. She has a yellow Tambourine-like weapon called the Pudding Ring. Her Attack call is Pudding Ring Inferno. XD

Now I am going to start on my May from Guilty Gear costume. I'm attempting to sew this one by myself. Lets see how it goes. This costumes is intended to be used during Cosfest in Singapore on the 9th of July 2006. I'll be joining a Guilty Gear group of cosplayers. I'll be making her huge huge anchor but I'm not sure how I am going to CARRY it with me to singapore for the event and pass through the kastam...the stares i will get..yeesh. I also have to complete two yukata commissions before Bon Odori and a watering can prop for a fellow cosplayer friend. I just received a commission request to make a pair of Sohee bells from Ragnarok Online. I'm in disbelief that someone actually read my DeviantArt journal and saw that i take commissions for props...well I'm glad i wrote that in my journal now am I? @_@ ;; Well, that is all for now and oh yea! My beloved, Kelvin came back from the US for his summer break for 3 months till September...garsh his hair is longer than mine but i think he looks quite ok with long hair. Will plan more stuff to do with him while he is here. We had planned to cosplay together during the KDU event but since it was postponed and he cant go for Cosfest because his sister is graduating in UK...so i guess i will have to find some other activity to do with him. And if that is not all, i have to make my portfolio cd soon because i need to get a job. Also, i should try and pick up Flash 8...just for the heck of it. XDXD So in Uni more stress or now more stress? I'm like 24/7 stress...O_o ;;

The beginning of year 2006...currently in a very lazy mood so i'll just post some pictures with short captions to shorten the story @_@ blabalbalbla. A beginning of a new year and also still full power of cosplaying...again...

I cosplayed another character from He is my Master anime : Kurauchi Anna because i love the anime so much. Again i didn't get Pochi done ~_~ ;;; Many people said I look totally different and couldn't recognize it was me. I had a private photoshoot for this cosplay. Must have been the wig and make-up.

Later I had another cosplay. It was a cosplay outing together with a few other friends. It was really fun although it was really hot. I cosplayed Hinamori Momo from bleach. I hadn't had any sleep the night before and drove directly from Melaka to the photoshoot site so it was quite a sleepy excursion for me. Not to mention the melting make-up under the hot sun..

For Chinese New year this year it was quite a normal one for me. I had more fun with my cousins more than the previous years. I guess as everyone grows up we all understand each other more and more, for my mom's side cousins at least. I'm quite close to them and i actually really want to meet them more often. They are all crazy and fun in their own ways.

Assignments have been pressing on my very badly lately. Not doing so well and lack of proper sleep. Thus, the explanation of my blog growing fungus. Oh wait...it IS the colour of fungus. its green =_= ;; oh well...currently waiting for a friend of mine to finish his artwork so we can go submit together in MMU. So i blog a little to release some stress.

This 17th and 18th of December is Comic Fiesta 2005. I will be opening a booth with Cubbie to basically showcase my art and sell some illustrations. I will also be cosplaying on both days of the Comic Fiesta.

I have some regrets regarding these cosplays. They are not up to what I wanted them to be due to time constraint, im just sucky etc etc. My athena costume is imcomplete because the patterns on her glove are not done and my boots are not accurate. My Mitsuki cosplay is not as bad but I wish i have the same shoes as her and blonde wig. Yea she is blonde but i am using my own hair and some black hair extensions. Initially I was supposed to do Princess Chibimoon (pink manga version) but my wig didn't arrive in time. Heck it hasn't even arrived yet. =_= my dress and accessories are done though. Everyone was expecting me to do something "amazing" again for my cosplay but i guess I am going to disappoint them a bit this time. Too much assignment, too little time. This totally killed my mood for cosplay for this event. I might or might not be entering the cosplay competition on the 18th though. If i manage to make my Pochi (big Alligator plush thing) for Mitsuki cosplay by today, then i will enter the competition, if not, i guess not. The most I enter for the heck of it.

I do take commissions for making props. If anyone is interested, just drop me a message. Get ma a picture of what you want to make, possibly a few angles with colour, a pic of an example that has been done (if any) and also a pic of the character with the item. However, I do not deal with casting plastic, wood and hard metal. Aluminium is fine though, but if the design makes it dangerous or sharp i would recommend other materials as you might not be able to enter the cosplay convention.

Will be updating a website with the pictures of all those items soon. Then everyone can see the work I have done.

Everyone was having a blog and i guess i got hooked into doing it as well. I used to have a blog..somewhere..if i can find it...ever...but I couldn't remember the password so,oh well. :p Today at work, it was the same ol boring thing. Not to bad though, my boss treats me well n stuff. Finished 6 out of 12 bookmarks for the deity doujinshi at the end of the year CF. I miss my boyboy a lot. He just went back to the US to study. Start of a new term..ah~~ Miss you lots... serious... Not gonna see him for 9 whole months. By the time he come back i would have graduated. Ah time will fly...i guess.

Final Year Project proposal (or FYP) is forever looming over me with greater threat. I must try to drag my butt off the floor to start doing something. Sigh...(Die u final project die die~!)

My hard disk is getting to small for me. 1GB left on D and 2GB on C. Man this is bad. Need to clear up some space (Tries to move finger and mouse...) ARGHHH no CDR TO BURN STUFF IN.

My ear hurts ( the top cartilledge piercing). It never seems to heal. Because of this I cant wear the earring i bought for myself and my boyboy :( I have no idea why it doesnt frikkin heal. I tried it, dettol, saline, using white gold stud.. but just a mistaken flick at my ear would make it bengkak. *grumble grumble*

I am looking forward to a small simple photoshoot this weekend, probably on saturday night or sunday morning. Gonna take a cosplay photo of Akane and Azami Kiryu, the Kiryu twins from Fatal Frame II : Crimson Butterfly. Nobody actually knows what colour is their kimono but anyway, I am using a red one. Gonna add a wig and after that just put make-up and add CG blabla to make it better. Currently I am trying to make Azuma Kazuma's Pantasia uniform from Yakitate Japan anime. Hope it works....I already cut it wrong once... aikz...

Tomorrow will be half day of work (yay). Looking forward to Kenny Rogers dinner after that. I hope everyone can make it : Mei Ling, Boey and Andrea :D

Today bought a nice pair of white gold earrings. One for me and one for my boyboy. Hope it fits though. Gonna Air-Mail it to him in the US. It better reach if not i will...i will...ok i WILL do something...but will think later. Currently has 5 ear piercings : 3 on the right, 2 on the left. The middle ones (pair number 2) are just pierced recently. Actually, that is the 3rd time I am piercing that spot. The 1st two times, the piercings just wont heal. Now it seems to be okay.

.....life...is...OKAY...I guess...
